What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers act like a gel and when injected into the skin, they help to fill areas lacking in volume. This can shallow wrinkles or enhance certain areas of the face. We mainly offer the market leading Juvederm range, which consists of hyaluronic acid, amongst other brands. This substance is found in almost all living things and in humans, it forms part of the supporting network for skin. It is not produced from animal sources and due to its natural origin, it is highly compatible with the human body.

What do fillers treat?

Dermal fillers are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles or areas of diminishing volume. Common areas targeted include the:

  • Forehead horizontal lines
  • Lines around the mouth (smoker's lines)
  • Lines at the side of the mouth (marionette lines)
  • Lines at the side of the nose (nasolabial folds)
  • Cheek volumisation
  • Lip augmentation
  • Some scars

How does it work and is it dangerous?

Juvederm dermal fillers are placed just under or within the deep layers of the skin. They act to volumise areas of the face to look more youthful, or to shallow deeper wrinkles and skin-folds. There is documented evidence for efficacy and safety for the commonly performed areas. It involves a few tiny injections into specific areas with a needle as fine as a human hair. This will have effect for a period of 6-9 months.

As in all medicines, there are side-effects. Significant adverse events in dermal filler injections are rare. The more common side-effects are minor, such as areas of mild bruising or redness that may last a few days. In a minority of individuals, they may react to the injections more than usual and form little lumps under the skin that normally dissipate after a fortnight. At Lumaesthetic, we are fully trained and experienced with our treatments so you will be in the safest hands.

What happens on the day of my Dermal Filler treatment?

On the day of your free consultation, you will meet with one of our surgeons who will explore what you have in mind. We will analyse your features and discuss which injectable treatments would most benefit you. We will also go over the risks of the procedure.

There is no obligation to undergo treatment from your free consultation and, as a principle in our clinic, we will always provide realistic expectations. After any dermal filler (Juvederm) injections, which will take no longer than 15-20 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated, you can carry on the day as normal.

What happens after my Dermal Filler?

After all treatments with Lumaesthetic Clinics, you will receive an aftercare leaflet, detailing what to expect, things to look out for and how to contact us. We suggest that you do not have large events (e.g. weddings) planned within a month of having dermal fillers injected.

You will see the effects of the dermal filler immediately after the injection so follow-up is usually not required. If you have any queries after your treatment, we are easily contactable and can see you again if clinically indicated. We suggest repeat injections at least every 6 months to maintain your rejuvenated look.
